Synopsis
In this comprehensive text, Preston Blair shares his practical knowledge to explain and demonstrate the magic of cartoon animation as well as many of his techniques. It describes how to: create a cartoon character's shape, personality, features and mannerisms; develop movements such as walking, running, stretching and dancing; construct dialogue and co-ordinate it with movement; and includes familiar and famous sketches, drawings and other artwork.

Preston Blair (1910–1995) was a native Californian who studied art at the Otis Art Institute, as well as illustration under Pruett Carter at Chouinard Art Institute (now California Institute of the Arts). As a member of the California Watercolor Society and the American Watercolor Society in New York, he exhibited work all over the country. Preston was a fine artist during the early days of full-length feature animation. For the Disney production Fantasia, he designed and animated the hippos in "The Dance of the Hours." He also animated Mickey Mouse in The Sorcerer's Apprentice, portions of the classic film Pinocchio, and the famous scene in Bambi when the owl talks about love in his "twitterpated" speech. At MGM, Preston directed Barney Bear short films, and he was well known as the designer and animator of one of Tex Avery's epic shorts Red Hot Riding Hood. Preston later moved to Connecticut, where he produced television commercials, educational films, and cartoons, including TheFlintstones. Before he passed away, he worked as an inventor of interactive TV programs, such as teaching reading through animation and virtual reality games featuring full-sized animated opponents.

Ich mache überhaupt keine Animationen, habe aber ein Buch gesucht, in dem man Cartoon-Figuren in verschiedenen Posen finden kann. Ganz wichtig war mir dabei zu sehen, ob z. B. der Fuß bei einer bestimmten Stellung der Figur nach links oder nach rechts zeigen muss. Neben der Gestik war mir auch die Mimik sehr wichtig. All das und noch einiges mehr habe ich hier gefunden. Die Figuren sind nicht nur sehr süß, sie sind, dank der guten Anleitungen, auch sehr einfach nachzuzeichnen, bzw. kann man schnell und einfach eigene Figuren damit entwickeln. Anhand von einigen Beispielen wird auch gezeigt, was man falsch machen könnte.Für mich ist dieses Buch eine wertvolle Hilfe mit der ich meine Skizzen schnell und einfach erstellen und dann in Illustrator als Grafik umsetzen kann. Daher kann ich das Buch auch Leuten empfehlen, die keine Animationen machen sondern wie ich einfach nur zeichnen möchten.
Man erkennt den Disney Style sofort - auch bei seinen eigenen Übungszeichnungen, die man nach diesem Buch macht. Aber deswegen kauft man das Buch ja auch: man mag den Style und will es lernen.Es gibt unzählige Beispielzeichnungen aber auch gute Erklärungen. Für mich bleibt nichts zu wünschen übrig.
Tolles Buch jeden Cent wert. Daher auch die Empfehlung.Super gemacht schöne Beispiele. Da bekommt man gleich Laune was selber zu machen.Grundlagenwerk von einem der Meister seines Faches.

I ran across Preston Blair's Advanced Animation in the Walter Foster "how-to" series many years ago. I'm not an animator, but the book was a great influence on my 30-year newspaper career. Every print cartoonist can learn from Blair-- especially the principles of "stretch & squash" and "follow-thru".I recommended the book to hundreds of beginning cartoonists and used "Advanced Animation" as a textbook in cartoon workshops at the Univ. of Washington, Western Wash. Univ. and Ohio State Univ. I also recommend Preston Blair highly on my present cartoon website.
This is an absolute must-have for any animator, or anyone striving to become one. These rules of motion hold true in all mediums, so this information can be applied to computer and stop-motion animation techniques as well as the traditional pencil and paper method.
